News Article (100k Views) : Children Dying In Mica Mines, Probe Ordered-
New Delhi : There has been a growing concern over the rising number of deaths reported in the illegal mines operated in what has come to be known as the ‘Mica Belt’. India is one of the major exporters of the extremely versatile minerals used in multiple products ranging from mobile phones to cosmetics. Despite laws being in place that makes it illegal for anyone under eighteen to operate in hazardous locations, many of the deaths reported are of children, some being as young as seven years old.
The law minister has confirmed that an investigation has been ordered. Child protection NGOs have noted that the issue is complex and widespread. Due to the lack of employment opportunities, mining families resort to the only opportunity available to them, working for up to eight hours a day for six days a week. Growing awareness of the illegality of these mines has led to deaths now going unreported over fears of losing the only source of income which amounts to fifty rupees per day. India exported forty million USD worth of mica in 2019. This is only expected to grow.
Authorities have been aware of the situation for some time now and previous investigations have not yielded significant results. With mounting pressure from social activists, child protection commissions, international organizations, and petitions filed by citizens, the issue has gained much needed awareness. Companies sourcing mica are now more cognizant of their supply chains and the government has begun cracking down on insidious mining mafias and middlemen. Such measures along with coordinated effort from the states offer a glimmer of hope for the 22000 children currently working in these dangerous conditions.

Lol not surprised. Poor children and the middle class like me are the only ones that suffer!

Youtube Community Post : Hey guys, you may have noticed that MissAndMakeUp has been silent since I hit 1 million subs. Someone had left a comment under my last video with a link to a news article. It was about the deaths of children working in mines extracting Mica. I read that and it broke my heart. It sent me down a rabbit hole and I spent the last few weeks learning about the atrocities that take place in this country while we live in comfort. I have cried myself to sleep on multiple occasions since then. I cannot bring myself to create videos anymore. I have to rethink my life. I am going on a hiatus. Please take a look at this yourselves and see what you can do to help. Donation links to NGOs that try and help these children are below. I want to apologise for being ignorant and promise to do better.

You made money off these unethical products and now you expect us to care that you feel guilty? Also how do you know these NGOs will actually help these kids, most NGOs are a scam. Stay safe guys and don’t click these links. If you want to help, go and volunteer.
wiseowlinthehouse :
Too little too late, don’t you think?
wanderlustdeb :
Very disturbing. Glad to see you raising awareness about this issue.

Youtube Community Post : Hello again, in my last post I had spoken about how I am rethinking my life. Thank you for all the positive responses and the support you have shown me. It has been so hard to deal with all of this. I know I have lost a lot of subscribers, and that is okay. I have bigger problems to deal with right now. For instance, the companies that I was working with are now threatening me with legal action for not complying with our contract which included a certain number of posts. But I know it’s actually because of the bad press I have generated for them. They claim that they are part of the solution trying to fix things but I doubt it. I don’t care anymore. If little children have to suffer in dangerous environments just to be able to eat, I think I can fight corporate greed. Once again, I urge you to look into this issue yourself. Links below.

We all have our own problems. Don’t try to guilt trip us please!

To those of you attacking her in the comments, shame on you! She has owned up to her past ignorance and is actually trying to make a difference now. The rest of you keyboard warriors want to appear righteous and so you pick an easy target. Why not go after the governments that let this happen? Or attack the giant companies that benefit from the suffering of these kids? You all are just as bad. At least she’s fighting them unlike you loud mouth cowards!
Vaselinface555 :
Ignore the hateful comments and just stick to your gut. We support you!

Youtube Video Transcript (45k Views) : Hey guys! I’ve seen an uptick in subscribers ever since I went on the CitizenSpeaks podcast and I just wanted to welcome all the new people. Changing from a makeup tutorial channel to talking about social issues hasn’t been easy. Just the numbers tell you, people don’t like being told they can do more … unless it’s more for themselves. More money, more knowledge, more peace of mind! Anyway, I am not judging .. or maybe I am? To those of you that are here, I’d like to say thanks. Let’s change things together.

You went from exploiting insecurity regarding beauty standards to now exploiting people’s guilt about social issues. Not doing nearly as well I see. Unsurprising. People don’t need to be lectured by someone like you.

It’s so refreshing to hear your story, from your legal battles to actually creating awareness about a serious issue. Glad to see hope isn’t dead in the country.

News Article (20k Views) : Mica Mines Are Now Entirely Free Of Child Labour
After decades of fighting, the National Commission of Child Protection has declared all the mica mines in the country are now free of child labour. A monumental effort led by the state governments, law enforcement, social activists, NGOs both national and international. Members at the gathering were visibly emotional after the announcement was made. The chairperson while praising the efforts of those involved made a note to pay respect to those that have lost their lives in these mines. “It is in their honour we must carry on this fight, so that one day we can eradicate child labour all over the world,” he said to a cheering crowd.
Youtube Short Transcript (15k Views) : As you can see .. I am quite emotional right now. From crying myself to sleep years ago, I finally get to cry happy tears. Not a single child will work in a mine again. They will go to schools .. they will get to live the same life that you and I did .. This is such a huge achievement and it couldn’t have been done without everyone involved. As long as we think it’s someone else’s responsibility, nothing is going to change. So thanks to all of you. Every one of you that shared a post, told a friend, or changed your life even a little bit after learning about such things. It just goes to show what a little bit of awareness can do. Empathy over apathy. But .. this fight is not over guys. There are still millions living in conditions of slavery even today. Someday .. hopefully soon even that comes to an end. We have to keep hope and fight.
